CCTV Camera Placement: Planning Useful Views and Privacy

Decide what the image must show

Choose the entrance or route you need to observe and whether you need an overview or identifiable detail. A broad garden view does not necessarily provide usable detail at the gate.

Test the view in real conditions

Check faces, glare, night lighting and nearby obstructions at the planned position. Follow the camera's mounting guidance; there is no universal height that produces useful footage for every lens and entrance.

Plan privacy before recording

In Spain, consult AEPD guidance for the installation and its captured area. Avoid assuming domestic use exempts footage of shared spaces, neighbours or public areas. Use masking and appropriate positioning where available.

Plan storage and access

Agree event or continuous recording, retention, exports and authorised viewers. Check what remains available during internet or power loss. Cameras provide information; neither camera count nor placement guarantees prevention or complete coverage.

Questions about this guide

How do I decide what each camera should cover?

Write down the purpose of each view, such as seeing who reaches a gate. Check the actual image at day and night; a wide overview may not capture the detail you need.

Should cameras point towards neighbouring property or a public street?

Review the applicable privacy rules before installation and keep the view limited to its intended purpose. Ask about masking and positioning where the proposed view reaches beyond your property.
