Device Transfer

Moving accounts, files, contacts and settings from an old phone or computer to a new one. A backup and an inventory of important apps help prevent data loss during the move.

How it works

Device transfer moves selected data and settings from one device to another. Copying files, reinstalling applications and restoring account access are separate tasks. A migration tool may cover only some of them, so define what must survive before starting.

A practical example

Documents may copy successfully while an email archive, password manager or application licence remains on the old computer. A cloud placeholder also may not be an actual offline file. Verify the important categories on the destination rather than trusting a progress bar alone.

What to check

Inventory files, accounts, applications and peripherals. Create a backup, confirm credentials and recovery information, and check which data is local or cloud-based. After transfer, open representative files and test required applications and connectivity with the owner.

Limits and safe next steps

Do not erase or dispose of the old device until the necessary outcome is verified and a recovery copy is available. Keep credentials private. Use appropriate secure-erasure guidance for later disposal; deleting a user folder alone is not a reliable data-sanitisation method.
