ONVIF

An industry standard that lets compatible IP cameras and recorders from different makers work together. Support varies by model and profile, so check what your devices actually offer before relying on it.

How it works

ONVIF profiles describe sets of interoperable functions for network video products. Compatibility depends on the profiles and features implemented by both camera and recorder. Support for a live stream does not automatically establish support for events, recordings or every setting.

A practical example

A recorder may display a camera picture while motion events remain unavailable. Compare the exact camera and recorder models and their declared profiles before replacing hardware. An accessible stream and a complete integration are different outcomes.

What to check

Check product documentation, firmware and declared conformity. Test live video, timestamps, authentication and the required events or playback functions separately. Use a dedicated camera account with appropriate permissions and record the working configuration.

Limits and safe next steps

Do not expose a camera administration interface to the internet to solve discovery problems. Network discovery can be affected by segmentation. ONVIF support does not remove the need for updates, access controls or a retention plan.
