Smart Lock

A door lock with electronic control such as a code, app or compatible key. Remote monitoring and access depend on the model, connectivity and installation.

How it works

A smart lock adds electronic control to a compatible locking arrangement. Mechanical fit, permitted installation, power and access management are separate requirements. Features such as remote access or automatic unlocking depend on the model and configuration.

A practical example

A lock may respond in its app while the door binds mechanically. Software cannot fix an unsuitable cylinder or misaligned door. Test the complete operation with a safe fallback and never assume an app confirmation proves the door is physically secured.

What to check

Check door and cylinder compatibility through the manufacturer’s guide. Review emergency access, battery warnings, authorised users and revocation of temporary access. Confirm how the system behaves without phone or network before depending on it.

Limits and safe next steps

Do not weaken fire-safety or emergency-egress requirements to install convenience hardware. Avoid sharing permanent administrator credentials. Actual security and installation suitability need model-specific assessment; no generic glossary entry can guarantee them.
