Two-way Audio

A camera or doorbell feature with a microphone and speaker so you can listen and talk through the device. Check who can use it, and whether it is switched on, when you review privacy settings.

How it works

Two-way audio lets supported equipment receive and transmit sound. Some systems alternate between talking and listening; others support simultaneous conversation. Microphone, speaker, app permissions and network conditions all affect whether the exchange is understandable.

A practical example

A visitor may hear the resident while the resident hears nothing because microphone permission is disabled. Echo can instead come from speaker placement or feedback. Diagnose the direction that fails before changing the entire camera configuration.

What to check

Test both directions using separate devices at their normal locations. Check microphone permissions, volume, supported audio format and whether push-to-talk must be held. Confirm performance on the connection normally used away from home, with administration kept protected.

Limits and safe next steps

Treat recorded or transmitted speech as sensitive. Explain audio use to relevant people and review the applicable privacy requirements for the installation. Do not rely on an app conversation as the only emergency contact or access method.
