UI (User Interface)

The visual elements a person interacts with on a website or app, buttons, menus, layout and colour.

How it works

The user interface is the visible and interactive layer through which a person operates a system. It includes controls, labels, feedback and states, not only colours and typography. A useful interface tells users what is possible and what happened after an action.

A realistic example

A glossary search can show the query, filtered results and a clear empty state. If it leaves an old result grid visible after an error, the visitor cannot tell whether the search worked. Loading, success and error states need distinct truthful feedback.

What to check

Check focus visibility, control labels, contrast and touch targets. Exercise empty, loading, error and success states in every language. Confirm that layout changes and animations do not obscure the next action or unexpectedly move content.

Limits and next steps

Visual polish alone does not establish usability. Keep behaviour consistent with familiar controls and avoid relying solely on colour or hover. Test with keyboard and touch as well as a mouse, including narrow screens and larger text.
