Setting Up a Secure VPN for Remote Work From Spain

Start with employer requirements

Use the access method approved by the organisation handling your work. A consumer browsing VPN and an employer remote-access VPN serve different purposes; one does not automatically provide the other's access or policy compliance.

Understand the tunnel's scope

A VPN protects traffic within its configured tunnel, but routing may exclude some traffic. It does not prevent phishing, malicious software or unsafe sharing. Keep devices updated and use the employer's account-security controls.

Test the actual work

Compare connection stability, video calls and file access under the agreed configuration. Performance depends on the network path, device and service. Avoid claiming that a particular protocol or router setting fixes every disconnect.

Document authorised access

Agree who manages accounts, updates, recovery and removal of access. Do not expose a home NAS directly to the internet as a shortcut. For faults, record errors and recent changes before changing employer-managed settings.

Questions about this guide

Can I use a personal VPN instead of my employer's VPN?

Ask your employer's IT team first. Their approved service may be required for access and security policy; a consumer VPN does not automatically provide access to workplace systems.

What should I send to IT when my work VPN fails?

Share the exact error, device and operating-system version, network used and whether normal browsing works. Do not send passwords, private keys or one-time authentication codes.
