Check the reason for changing
Wi-Fi 6 is an equipment capability, not a guarantee of better internet speed. Identify whether the problem is coverage, congestion, old equipment or the service itself before replacing a router.
Confirm both ends
Clients must support the relevant features to use them. Wired ports, access-point links and device limits also matter. A new router does not automatically give older phones every advertised capability.
Keep coverage separate
Thick walls and poor node placement can still cause weak links. Test important rooms and tasks. A newer generation label is not a substitute for a suitable layout or supported backhaul.
Compare the whole upgrade
Review compatibility, security support, setup costs and the devices you use. If the current network meets your needs and remains supported, replacing it solely for a badge may bring little practical benefit.
What the efficiency improvement means
Wi-Fi 6 includes OFDMA, which lets an access point allocate parts of a transmission to several compatible clients rather than serving each separately in that transmission. This can improve sharing of airtime in a busy network. The router and clients must support the relevant functions; it is not a promise of a fixed speed increase for every device.
Two different upgrade situations
A household with good signal but several compatible laptops making calls and transferring files at once may benefit from more efficient airtime sharing. Test that workload before and after a change. By contrast, one laptop behind a thick wall with a weak upstream link needs a coverage plan, and a connection limited by the internet provider needs that service investigated. A Wi-Fi 6 badge alone addresses neither constraint.
Questions about this guide
Will a WiFi 6 router make every existing device faster?
A device's capabilities, coverage and workload still matter. Check the devices you use and the source of the current problem before buying a router based on its generation.
What should I compare before replacing my router?
Review coverage, supported security, connection limits and compatibility with your provider. A newer radio standard does not fix every internet-service or placement problem.
