Inventory data and account links
Find local files, cloud access, licences and removable media before giving away a device. Verify the files you need on another device. Ordinary deletion is not proof that personal data is removed.
Use the correct erase procedure
Follow the manufacturer's current transfer or recycling instructions for that model. Sign out and remove device links as directed. Reset options differ, and encryption or recovery information may be needed.
Handle damaged storage carefully
If erasure cannot complete or highly sensitive data is involved, seek suitable sanitisation or disposal advice. Do not power a damaged battery device just to check files or improvise physical destruction.
Choose an appropriate destination
Confirm reuse, repair or authorised recycling options for the device and batteries. Keep any disposal records needed for business equipment. Moving a device abroad or to another person does not itself erase stored information.
Do not overlook removable storage
Check memory cards, removable drives and any separate backup media before handing over the device. The main device's reset may not erase those items, and wiping them may destroy the only copy you intended to retain.
Questions about this guide
What should I do before selling an old device?
Verify your backup, remove accounts according to the manufacturer's transfer procedure and check storage cards or SIMs. Test the completed reset without leaving your account attached.
Is deleting visible files enough before handing over a drive?
No. Choose an appropriate erasure or disposal procedure for the storage type and sensitivity of the data. A normal file deletion is not a reliable sanitisation method.
